MOSHE HILL OPINION COLUMNS APRIL 17 2024
The news following Shabbos that Iran attacked Israel with hundreds of missiles and drones was a reliving of the October 7 nightmare all over again for the American Jewish community. The result of this attack, as opposed to October 7, did not leave as profound an impact on the lives and psyche of Israelis and the Americans who support them, due to the technological wizardry and the Divine Intervention that led to 99% of those missiles and drones to be intercepted before hitting Israeli soil. Instead of picking up the pieces and then asking “how this happened,” we can go straight to the asking.
Iran claims this is in retaliation to the Israeli strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria that took out a senior Quds Force commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi. Zahedi was targeted for a simple reason: He gave the go-ahead to Hamas for October 7. This strike was not Israel attempting to escalate the war with Hamas by attacking Iran directly, this was a part of the offensive strike against Hamas and those who caused the October 7 massacre.
Iran, and their allies in the West, ignore that fact claiming that Israel struck first, therefore sending over 300 missiles and drones to civilian heavy population centers in Israel is justifiable. One of those allies is the Biden administration, who has been allowing Iran to rake in hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue since Joe Biden came into office in a pathetic attempt to re-enter the disastrous Obama-era Iran deal.
According to Reuters, “Iran informed Turkey in advance of its planned operation against Israel, a Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters on Sunday, adding that Washington had conveyed to Tehran via Ankara that any action it took had to be “within certain limits.” This means that the United States essentially gave permission to an enemy of the United States and Israel to attack an ally of the United States: Israel.
If this sounds familiar, it’s because it is. Joe Biden, before Russia attacked Ukraine, famously said that a “minor incursion” by Russia into Ukraine would yield little to no response from the United States. Biden also said that the Taliban would not retake Afghanistan. In fact, everything Biden seems to say about foreign policy is – and always has been – the exact opposite of what is both logical and moral.
In the best possible defense for the Biden team, one could claim that Biden knew that Israel, along with the U.S., U.K., France and Jordanian militaries, would shoot down the missiles before they hit Israeli territory. If that is Joe Biden’s claim, then he decided to gamble the lives of over 9 million people, along with the holiest sites in Judaism, Islam and Christianity, because he was too weak to tell Iran that if they shoot at Israel, America will back Israel with the full might of the American military.
Joe Biden instead basically told Israel to stand down after they were shot with (again) over 300 missiles and drones, basically telling Israel, “No harm, no foul.” This is not how the Middle East works. If Israel does not take out major Iranian infrastructure and continue to decimate Iranian proxy groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, then Iran will be emboldened and will strike another time. Iran will continue to supply its proxy terror groups with more weapons. Iran will strike targets in Europe and America, perhaps sending its militants through the extremely porous southern border.
Joe Biden’s weakness caused the chaos in the world that we see today, there’s no denying it. What is excruciatingly frustrating are the sycophantic Democratic accounts on social media (who claim all Trump voters are in a cult) who are so grateful that Biden is in the Oval Office instead of Trump during these dangerous times. This is maddening. Between Afghanistan, Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, Joe Biden has caused death and destruction through his ineffectual and wavering positions. Senator John Kennedy said it best. “With respect, go to Amazon and buy a spine online,” he told Fox News Sunday.
Biden needs more than a spine to get through what will hopefully be the last few months of his presidency. Since he is incapable of finding one at this late stage of his career, it might be sufficient for him to just get out of the way.
