MOSHE HILL OPINION COLUMNS JULY 31 2024
The Democratic Party base has become overrun with socialist policy stemming from Marxist ideology. For a while, this was tempered by the Party bosses and elites, who pushed forward a steadily progressive agenda without tipping towards outright extremist communism. These same people, thinking that the time is ripe for truly embracing radicalism, have embraced as their chosen nominee the most leftwing radical presidential candidate in American presidential history.
For all their talk about how much they cherish the democratic process, Democrats have not had a true primary process since 2008. The cult of personality around Barack Obama propelled him to the top of their ticket then. In 2012, Obama was the incumbent, and Parties generally try to prevent any challenger to incumbent presidents. In 2016, Hillary was crowned as the successor to Obama, with the media and Democrats listing all others as “challengers” to her, even though she was not an incumbent.
Democrats had a problem in 2016. Obama made the socialist base of the Party promises that he did not keep. He, in his personage, ideology, and legislation, wooed college Marxists a communist utopia that never materialized. The only thing they got out of Obama was an upended healthcare system, whose costs were spiraling out of control, and some platitudes about “hope” and “change.” Hillary ran to the middle, banking on a broad coalition of voters to bring her to the White House, because she couldn’t count on outsized turnout form the Black community like Obama received. This gave Bernie Sanders a wide opening in the Left lane.
Bernie won the Democratic Party in 2016. Due to the manipulations by the superdelegate system in the Party rules, he wasn’t on the ticket, but his ideology grabbed hold and never let go. In 2017, Bernie staffers formed groups like Justice Democrats to get their candidates into office. In 2018, the first “Squad” members were elected to Congress. In 2020, Bernie won the first two primaries, and the Democrats needed to stop him. The Party conspired to put all their weight behind Joe Biden before the South Carolina primary, and they kept Bernie off the ticket.
Democrats now had another problem. They needed to draw in the Bernie voters who hated Joe Biden so they could beat Donald Trump. To bring them in, they made two moves. First, they created the Joe Biden-Bernie Sanders unity task force, a 110-page policy document that Biden endorsed and put on his website, pledging to be as radical as Bernie when he got to the White House. The second was to nominate the only Senator more leftwing than Bernie Sanders to the Vice Presidency: Kamala Harris.
Now that she has stolen the presidential nomination from under Joe Biden with the help of the Party leaders and delegates, all of the past statements made by Kamala Harris are coming back to haunt her. Harris was so unpopular and radical that she dropped out of the 2020 race in 2019, before any primary vote was held. Now the media is working overtime pretending that she’s not as incompetent and insane as everyone knows her to be.
Govtrack, a website that follows legislation and elected representatives, had Harris as the most liberal Democratic Senator of 2019. She was ranked lowest in the Senate in terms of joining bills sponsored by Republicans, so we know she is unwilling and unable to work across the aisle. She got the fewest bills out of Committee, held the fewest positions on Committees, and was the most absent. Her time in the Senate is indicative of her personality: all sizzle, no steak.
Philosophically, Harris is a nightmare. She strongly pushes the notion of “equity” over “equality,” openly acknowledging that equity means everyone ends up in the same place. This is openly communist rhetoric, which basically makes everyone the lowest common denominator. She supported the George Floyd riots of 2020, urging people to bail out rioters and saying to Stephen Colbert, “They’re not going to stop…they’re not going to let up, and they should not, and we should not.” She supports sanctuary cities, defunding the police, and open borders. She compared ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to the KKK. One of the first campaign stops Harris made was to Ru Paul’s Drag Race.
The scariest clip that recently resurfaced is what Harris says about radical Islamist terrorists. When speaking to the Islamic Center of Southern California, Harris says the term “radical Islamic terrorism” should be abolished (along with “illegal alien”). Harris consistently ignores the attacks on Israel by Hamas and Hezbollah, focusing instead on pressuring Israel into granting concessions to those terrorists in the pursuit of failed diplomatic plans.
Harris is the product of a Democratic Party that has completely lost its way. Much more will come out about Harris over the next three months, yet the Democrats played this as well as they possibly could have. Forgoing the primary process allowed Harris to get into this race with as clean a slate anyone has ever gotten at this stage of an election, as the primary process itself is an exercise in muddying up the nominees. Democrats are banking on ignorance and media cover-ups to get their nominee over the finish line. Republicans need to be ready with a solid plan to counter her; otherwise, we’re going to get four years of an administration that is more than willing to burn everything this country stands for down.
